Fantasia (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)

»rank: 75

starring: Leopold Stokowski, Deems Taylor, Julietta Novis, Corey Burton, Walt Disney
directed by: Ben Sharpsteen, Bill Roberts, Ford Beebe, Hamilton Luske, James Algar

: essential video:Groundbreaking on several counts, not the least of which was an innovative use of animation and stereophonic sound, this ambitious Disney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940. Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators, resulting in surreal fantasy and playful escapism. Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia 0rchestra provided the music for eight segments by the composers Tchaikovsky, Moussorgsky, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Ponchielli, Bach, Dukas, and Schubert. Not all the sequences were created equally, but a few are ...

»rank: 1742

starring: Mel Brandt, Mitchell Kriegman, Laurie Metcalf, Emily Prager, Jack Handey
directed by: Matthew Meshekoff, Tom Schiller, Walter Williams (IV), Mike Judge, Bill D'Elia

: :This program, which features the best satires of American presidencies from 25 years of Saturday Night Live, was newsworthy when it first aired, two days before the 2000 election, as the two major candidates had previously taped segments that were edited into an opening skit. George Bush bumbles and Al Gore is punctilious, and both are quite funny delivering their lines. Also included in the program is SNL's satire of their first debate, in which a confused Bush (played by Will Ferrell) winces ...

Saturday Night Live - Christmas

»rank: 4360

starring: Christopher Guest, Robert Smigel
directed by: Christopher Guest, Robert Smigel, Robert Altman, Paul Thomas Anderson, Albert Brooks

: :The best Christmas material from two-and-a-half decades of Saturday Night Live is collected in this video, which gets off to a raucous start by presenting Chevy Chase's (literally) unbalanced rendition of President Gerald Ford decorating the White House Christmas tree. A number of memorable Christmas satires appear, including Eddie Murphy's spoof of Mr. Rodgers, Ana Gasteyer appearing in the 'Martha Stewart Topless Christmas Special,' and even Adam Sandler's 'Hanukkah Song.' Some of the best material is from the show's early freewheeling years: a classic ...

Saludos Amigos

»rank: 14138

directed by: Norman Ferguson, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, Bill Roberts

: :The first of two features Walt Disney made at the behest of the 0ffice of lnter-American Affairs, Saludos Amigos consists of four cartoons linked by live-action travel footage. The very funny 'Lake Titicaca' finds Donald Duck high in the Bolivian Andes, struggling with a recalcitrant llama. 'Pedro,' the story of a little airplane replacing his father on a mail run across the Andes, is a variation on 'The Little Engine That Could.' 'El Gaucho Goofy' continues the popular 'How To' cartoon series that ...

Packing a whopping 22 hours of content on five double-sided discs, Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History is a treasure trove for fans of the purple and gold. In fact, even the ambitious title doesn't do the set justice, as the opening 2002 documentary traces the franchise to its Minnesota roots and a vintage 1953 feature shows the game's first dominant big man, George Mikan, in action. The glitzier West Coast years--Wilt, West, Magic, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe, et al.--are the primary focus, of course, and this set, one of the first two entries in the NBA Dynasty series (along with the slightly less-substantial Chicago Bulls: The 1990s), collects seven of the highlight videos that were released on VHS (2000 and 2002 were also on DVD), which provide a time-capsule look at each of the championship seasons.

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

Demons and wizards and bears, oh my! After finding their musical stride with 1971's Look at Yourself, Uriah Heep followed up a year later with this, their first foray into the lyrical realm of dungeons, dragons, and whatnot. David Byron's intermittent falsetto is in full effect by the time the chorus comes thundering in on heavy hits such as "Easy Living" and "Traveler in Time." But the 'ard 'n' 'eavy Brit rockers also had their sensitive side, as evidenced by the more reflective Ken Hensley-penned tracks like "Circle of Hands" and "All My Life." --Billy Grenier
