Sleeping Beauty (Fully Restored Limited Edition) (Walt Disney's Masterpiece)

»rank: 336

starring: Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, Eleanor Audley, Verna Felton, Barbara Luddy
directed by: Clyde Geronimi

: :Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. ln the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out ...

The Music Man

The Music Man

»rank: 1474

starring: Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford
directed by: Morton DaCosta, Scott Benson

: essential video:The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as 'Professor' Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the 'think system.' But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always ...

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

»rank: 10390

starring: Shirley Temple, Randolph Scott, Jack Haley, Gloria Stuart, Phyllis Brooks
directed by: Allan Dwan

: :Shirley Temple shines as a young radio entertainer in this 1938 Darryl Zanuck film inspired by Kate Wiggin's classic novel. ln a role perfectly suited to her song and dance talents, Temple plays the 'very self-reliant' Rebecca Winstead, a precocious pixie who wins the audition to become Crackling Grain Flakes 'Little Miss America' for a new radio broadcast. Fame is fleeting, however, when she moves to Sunnybrook Farm to live with Aunt Miranda (Helen Westley), an overbearing curmudgeon who absolutely forbids any entanglements ...

Goldfinger

Goldfinger

»rank: 4421

starring: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet
directed by: Guy Hamilton

: essential video:Dry as ice, dripping with deadpan witticisms, only Sean Connery's Bond would dare disparage the Beatles, that other 1964 phenomenon. No one but Connery can believably seduce women so effortlessly, kill with almost as much ease, and then pull another bottle of Dom Perignon '53 out of the fridge. Goldfinger contains many of the most memorable scenes in the Bond series: gorgeous Shirley Eaton (as Jill Masterson) coated in gold paint by evil Auric Goldfinger and deposited in Bond's bed; silent ...

Evening Star

Evening Star

»rank: 4077

starring: Shirley MacLaine, Bill Paxton, Juliette Lewis, Miranda Richardson, Ben Johnson
directed by: Robert Harling

: :Picking up the story thread left by 1983's Terms of Endearment, this overwrought sequel is made palatable by Shirley MacLaine's charismatic performance, which in turn is nearly equaled by Marion Ross's role as her housekeeper. An unexpected surprise, Ross obviously was never allowed to display her range as Mrs. Cunningham on Happy Days. Returning as the vibrant Aurora Greenway, MacLaine far outshines the thin material involving the tangled and unhappy lives of her three grandchildren. The plot picks up 13 years after the ...

Steel Magnolias - Special Edition

Steel Magnolias - Special Edition

»rank: 629

starring: Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah
directed by: Herbert Ross

: essential video:Based on Robert Harling's play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years' worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between ...

Lolita (1962)

Lolita (1962)

»rank: 15939

starring: James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon, Gary Cockrell, Jerry Stovin
directed by: Stanley Kubrick

: essential video:When director Stanley Kubrick released his film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel about a hopelessly pathetic middle-aged professor's sexual obsession with his 12-year-old stepdaughter, the ads read, 'How did they ever make a film of Lolita?' The answer is 'they' didn't. As he did with his 'adaptations' of Barry Lyndon, A Clockwork 0range, and, especially, The Shining, Kubrick used the source material and, simply put, made another Stanley Kubrick movie--even though Nabokov himself wrote the screenplay. The chilly director nullifies ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
