A Bug's Life

»rank: 1882

starring: Phyllis Diller, Dave Foley, Brad Garrett, Jonathan Harris, Bonnie Hunt
directed by: Andrew Stanton

: :There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible. Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for ...

Blast From the Past

Blast From the Past

»rank: 4318

starring: Steve Bean, Dave Foley, Brendan Fraser, Richard Gilbert-Hill, Ted Kairys

: :Coasting on the successes of Gods and Monsters and George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser turns in yet another winning performance in this fish-out-of-water comedy in which Pleasantville meets modern-day Los Angeles, with predictably funny results. Fraser stars as Adam, who was born in the bomb shelter of his paranoid inventor dad (a less-manic-than-usual Christopher Walken), who spirited his pregnant wife (Sissy Spacek, in fine comic form) underground when he thought the Communists dropped the bomb (actually, it was a plane crash). Armed ...

On the Line

»rank: 12009

starring: Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, Emmanuelle Chriqui, GQ, James Bulliard
directed by: Eric Bross

: :Befitting its boy-band sensibility, 0n the Line is an amiable vehicle for 'N Sync's Lance Bass, who makes his star-producer debut with this bright-eyed romantic comedy. Bass plays a Chicago adman who meets the girl of his dreams (newcomer Emmanuelle Chriqui) on the 'L' train but fails to get her name and phone number. His roommates (including 'N Sync bandmate Joey Fatone) devise a scheme to find the elusive 'L-train girl,' and like the similarly plotted Serendipity, this love-struck scenario plays out with ...

Dick

»rank: 19227

starring: Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams, Dan Hedaya, Will Ferrell, Bruce McCulloch
directed by: Andrew Fleming

: :So who exactly was Deep Throat, that all-important source who helped Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein bust open the Watergate scandal? Well, according to this thoroughly funny, keenly smart comedy from director Andrew Fleming (The Craft), it was two sweetly daft teenage girls named Betsy and Arlene. Taking the history and figures from Watergate and running gleefully and sacrilegiously amok, Dick offers up a hilarious what-if scenario that takes the Nixon administration's downfall from grave tragedy to hilarious farce. When Betsy (Kirsten Dunst) ...

Kids in the Hall - Brain Candy

»rank: 8981

starring: Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson
directed by: Kelly Makin

: :Moviegoers never caught on to its brilliance, but Brain Candy is a smart, outrageously inventive vehicle for Canada's most irreverent comedy troupe. The subtly subversive plot is about society's ongoing search for the perfect 'happy drug,' and the Kids inhabit a multitude of costumes and characters as they celebrate--and lament--the invention of 'Gleemonex,' the ultimate antidepressant, which locks users into their happiest memories... and subsequently renders them comatose. No worries for the Roritor Chemical Company; they don't care much about side effects! With ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
