Barbarella

Barbarella

»rank: 9424

starring: Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea, Marcel Marceau
directed by: Roger Vadim

: essential video:Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying ...

Pink Flamingos (25th Anniversary Edition)

Pink Flamingos (25th Anniversary Edition)

»rank: 13551

starring: Nancy Crystal, Divine, Pat Lefaiver, David Lochary, Edith Massey
directed by: John Waters

: essential video:This is the movie that made John Waters famous, and quite possibly the film that made bad taste cool. Yes, Virginia, a large transvestite actually eats dog feces as a kind of dizzying denouement to this frequently illogical and intentionally disgusting movie, but by the time that happens, you're already numb ... and you've possibly laughed to the point of losing bladder control. The plot revolves around two vile families laying claim to the title 'The Filthiest People Alive.' You've got ...

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

»rank: 14645

starring: Michael Blodgett, Phyllis Davis, Veronica Ericson, Erica Gavin, David Gurian

:Description:When three female rock'n'rollers travel to Hollywood to claim an inheritance, they meet up with a kinky music promoter who turns them on to a whole new scene. At first, all seems very exciting and the naïve trio becomes submerged in his dangerous tinseltown underworld-before they discover his true motives. :You either love Russ Meyer's garishly sexist movies about bodacious babes and priapic men or you find them utterly disgusting. The response to his work is that clear-cut. This film, which features a ...

Flesh Gordon

Flesh Gordon

»rank: 21235

starring: Howard Alexander, Annette Anderson, Mycle Brandy, Mark Fore, Leonard Goodman
directed by: Howard Ziehm

: :Directors Howard Ziehm and Michael Benveniste draw from the same cliffhanging Flash Gordon serials of the 1930s as the glitzy 1980 tongue-in-cheek space opera for their soft-core spoof. Hockey hero Flesh Gordon and often-naked love interest Dale Ardor join Dr. Jerkoff in his battle against the mad Emperor Wang from the planet Porno, who has unleashed his diabolical sex ray on the Earth. Full of toilet humor, juvenile sexual innuendo, and unending naked romps and orgies, it's hardly in the same company as the ...

Deluxe Ed Wood Angora Box Set

»rank: 29039

starring: Gregory Walcott, Tom Keene, Edward D. Wood Jr., Bela Lugosi, Mona McKinnon
directed by: Edward D. Wood Jr.

: :ls Ed Wood the worst director who ever lived? His films are campy, clumsy, and hysterically inept, but their enthusiasm and good humor overcome incoherent scripts and wooden performances with heart, soul, and an infectious sense of fun. The jaw-dropping 'documentary' Glen or Glenda? is a bizarre confessional starring Wood himself as a misunderstood transvestite and Bela Lugosi as a smirking godlike narrator. 'Pull ze string!' shouts Lugosi as Wood reveals his angora fetish and love of women's underwear to the world. Lugosi ...

: :MSTies rejoice! The year 2000 is not for naught! Rhino Video has beamed us another fine transmission from the Satellite of Love! The particular piece of filmic anguish we must share this time with Mike and the 'bots is 'The Creeping Terror,' in which our namesake villain appears to be a drunken syphilitic Gumby trailing a moldy picnic blanket. As Mike points out, he's neither the most nimble nor the most ferocious cannibal alien you've ever seen: 'The creeping part is apt, but ...

The World of Sid & Marty Krofft

»rank: 7882

starring: World of Sid & Marty Krofft

: :lf you grew up in the '70s and glued yourself to the television every Saturday morning, bowl of cereal in hand, then you are most definitely familiar with the world of Sid & Marty Krofft. A live-action oasis in a desert of anemic animated programming, the shows of the messrs. Krofft were marked by outlandish fantasy plots, otherworldly monsters, horrible costumes, mediocre production values, zealous if cheesy acting, and numerous adolescent actors with which the young target audience could identify. And they were ...

Plan 9 from Outer Space

»rank: 28096

starring: Carl Anthony, Bill Ash, John Breckinridge, Conrad Brooks, David De Mering

: :Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can't quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from 0uter Space is not one of these movies. lt is just as magnificently terrible as you've heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates ('Future events such as these will affect you in the future!') as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to ...

With the help of producer/songwriters William Orbit, Mark Ronson, Jerry Meehan, Joey Negro and Soul Mekanik (plus guests as diverse as The Pet Shop Boys and Lily Allen), Robbie Williams has achieved a most radical transformation. Gone is the slick, pop-rogue of yesteryear: in his place is a new Robbie that raps, embraces club beats and (mostly) favours personal indulgence over cheesy, universal pop. Recent single "Rudebox", all electronic riddims and slack-rap vocal delivery, was just the start of this transition. The rest of Rudebox completes the remarkable overhaul with several eclectic covers - from Manu Chau's "Bongo Bong" and Lewis Taylor's underground classic "Lovelight," to subversive takes on The Human League ("Louise"), My Robot Friend ("We're The Pet Shop Boys") and Stephen Duffy ("Kiss Me") – and tracks such as "Keep On", "Good Doctor" and "Dickhead", which confirm his quite bewildering quest to becoming a comedic, Staffs-accented version of The Streets.

Slightly more serious are his attempts at what he describes as 'wonky pop'. Songs like "Viva Life On Mars", his odd ode to Madonna ("She's Madonna"), the dark "The Actor" and catchy club-hit-in-waiting "Never Touch That Switch" all feature innovative production and interesting arrangements. Toward the end, we get "The 80s" and "The 90s", two more amusing "rap"-tracks that cover the singer's adolescence and his Take That years respectively; these underline the nostalgic, end-of-an-era feel of the LP. Audaciously eclectic and admirably upfront, Rudebox is overtly a form of personal catharsis. Not all the experiments work, but they're better than you might think, and now they're off his chest it'll be interesting to see where the new Robbie Williams heads to next.--Paul Sullivan

Greatest Hits chronicles the remarkable journey of Mr Robert Williams, from being the "fat dancer from Take That" (c. Noel Gallagher) to the multi-million pound jewel in EMI’s crown. Assembled in chronological order, all the hits are here, except for his initial solo outing "Freedom", and it’s interesting to see how his sound evolves from wannabe Britpop buffoon on the sub-Oasis pubrock of "Old Before I Die" to the subtle captivating melodies of "Feel" and "Come Undone". There are so many great tracks that it’s impossible to list them all, but highlights have to be the barnstorming "Let Me Entertain You", the bouncy, floor-filling "Rock DJ" and the song that madeth the man, "Angels". The two latest additions to his canon--"Radio" and "Misunderstood" clearly have one eye on the past, the other on the future – with the latter an instant classic Robbie ballad from the Bridget Jones 2 soundtrack and the former a foray into the world of electro pop that sounds like a warped Human League track from the 1980s. This has to be Robbie’s forte, his ability to make great pop records that always sound fresh and full of energy. Every home should have a copy of this album, and chances are, by the end of 2004, most of them will. -- Melanie Wilkin
