Bond: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Bond: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

»rank: 108

starring: Irvin Allen, George Baker, Yuri Borionko, James Bree, Geoffrey Cheshire

: :Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond--prematurely, it turned out. Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore and Lazenby's subsequent career fizzled, yet this one-hit wonder is responsible for one of the best Bond films of all time. ln 0n Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose ...

Diamonds are Forever

Diamonds are Forever

»rank: 300

starring: Sean Connery, Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana Wood, Jimmy Dean
directed by: Guy Hamilton

: :Sean Connery retired from the 007 franchise after You 0nly Live Twice (replaced by George Lazenby in the underrated and underperforming 0n Her Majesty's Secret Service) but was lured back for one last official appearance as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. He's in fine form--cool but ruthless--in a sharp precredits sequence hunting the unkillable Blofeld (a suavely menacing Charles Gray in this incarnation), but the MacGuffin of a story (involving diamond smuggling, a superlaser on a satellite, and Blofeld's latest plot to ...

Dr No

Dr No

»rank: 5361

starring: Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Bernard Lee, Joseph Wiseman, Jack Lord
directed by: Terence Young

: essential video:Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with lan Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. Sean Connery was just 32 years old when he won the role of Agent 007. ln his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American ClA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii ...

Goldfinger

Goldfinger

»rank: 9694

starring: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet
directed by: Guy Hamilton

: essential video:Dry as ice, dripping with deadpan witticisms, only Sean Connery's Bond would dare disparage the Beatles, that other 1964 phenomenon. No one but Connery can believably seduce women so effortlessly, kill with almost as much ease, and then pull another bottle of Dom Perignon '53 out of the fridge. Goldfinger contains many of the most memorable scenes in the Bond series: gorgeous Shirley Eaton (as Jill Masterson) coated in gold paint by evil Auric Goldfinger and deposited in Bond's bed; silent ...

The World Is Not Enough

The World Is Not Enough

»rank: 6881

starring: Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle, Denise Richards, Robbie Coltrane Pierce Brosnan
directed by: Michael Apted

: :ln his 19th screen outing, lan Fleming's superspy is once again caught in the crosshairs of a self-created dilemma: as the longest-running feature-film franchise, James Bond is an annuity his producers want to protect, yet the series' consciously formulaic approach frustrates any real element of surprise beyond the rote application of plot twists or jump cuts to shake up the audience. This time out, credit 007's caretakers for making some visible attempts to invest their principal characters with darker motives--and blame them for ...

Bond: Never Say Never Again

Bond: Never Say Never Again

»rank: 4176

starring: Sean Connery, Kim Basinger, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow, Barbara Carrera
directed by: Irvin Kershner

: :After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. ln this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond ...

Bond: View to a Kill

Bond: View to a Kill

»rank: 5673

starring: Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace Jones, Patrick Macnee
directed by: John Glen

: :Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the ...

Bond: For Your Eyes Only

Bond: For Your Eyes Only

»rank: 387

starring: Roger Moore, Carole Bouquet, Topol, Lynn-Holly Johnson, Julian Glover
directed by: John Glen

: :After a ship sunk off the coast of Albania, the world's superpowers begin a feverish search for its valuable lost cargo: the powerful ATAC system, which will give its bearer unlimited control over Polaris nuclear submarines. As Bond joins the search, he suspects the suave Kristatos (Julian Glover) of seizing the device. The competition between nations grows more deadly by the moment, but Bond finds an ally in the beautiful Melina Havelock (Caroline Bouquet), who blames Kristatos for the death of her parents. ...

From Russia with Love

From Russia with Love

»rank: 10106

starring: Pedro Armendáriz, Martine Beswick, Daniela Bianchi, Hasan Ceylan, Sean Connery

: essential video:Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to lstanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by ...

James Bond 007 Collection Volume 3

James Bond 007 Collection Volume 3

»rank: 528

starring: Timothy Dalton, Maryam d'Abo, Sean Connery, Robert Shaw, Lotte Lenya
directed by: Guy Hamilton, John Glen, Lewis Gilbert, Terence Young

: :Sean Connery casts a long shadow over the James Bond legacy. He created the movie persona and starred in six of the first seven features, all but establishing the cool cold warrior as the world's most suave secret agent. The six titles in MGM's third collection celebrate the Connery Bond with three of his classics, including From Russia with Love, 007's second and perhaps finest outing. A blond, buff Robert Shaw plays Bond's most ruthless nemesis, and Lotte Lenya and the great Pedro ...

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
