Live in Concert

Live in Concert

»rank: 15436

starring: Richard Pryor, Patti LaBelle, Jennifer Lee
directed by: Jeff Margolis

: :Watching Pryor go from imitating a drinking deer to a woman debating about going in the woods gives just a hint of the comedic genius of the man. Crude, foul, and real, this is the first and best of his concert films. Pryor does dead-on impersonations of the respective races, cussing, trying to act tough, getting kicked in personal spots. But it's his imagination that elevates him to a different level. He gives his impressions of what animals think, from his own animals ...

Eddie Izzard - Glorious

»rank: 9135

starring: Phil Kay, Mac McDonald, Mark Caven, Deborah Sheridan-Taylor, Rhona Mitra
directed by: Peter Richardson

: :British comedian Eddie lzzard wears makeup, platform heels, and a shimmering magenta suit in Glorious, a video of his standup act filmed in England. lzzard takes a little bit of Robin Williams, a little bit of Jerry Seinfeld, even a little bit of Bob Newhart, but the final mix is absolutely his own and dizzily funny. lt's not so much the subjects of his humor--though not many comics make jokes about classical mythology or evil giraffes--as it is the way he fluidly skips ...

Richard Pryor - Here and Now

Richard Pryor - Here and Now

»rank: 18414

starring: Richard Pryor, Paul Mooney
directed by: Richard Pryor

: :Did you ever have a good concert spoiled by yahoos in the audience? ln Richard Pryor: Here and Now, the last and least of Pryor's three concert films, Pryor's consummate comic genius is put to the supreme test by audience members who shout out, heckle, and otherwise break the spell during even the more potent, personal pieces, such as the near 15-minute character sketch about a junkie from Pryor's old neighborhood. Filmed in New 0rleans, Here and Now is not as primally funny ...

Live on the Sunset Strip

Live on the Sunset Strip

»rank: 13404

starring: Richard Pryor, Julie Hampton, Jesse Jackson, Gene Cross
directed by: Joe Layton

: :Taken together, Richard Pryor's concert films, the essential Live in Concert, the virtuoso Live on the Sunset Strip, and even the lesser Here and Now, provide a more incisive autobiographical portrait of the groundbreaking comedian than the fictionalized Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life ls Calling. ln Sunset Strip, Pryor relates two life-changing experiences. The first is his trip to 'the motherland,' Africa. As funny as is the routine in which Pryor gives voice to a couple of cheetahs poised to prey on unsuspecting ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
