Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil

Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil

»rank: 1302

starring: John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, Jack Thompson, Irma P. Hall, Jude Law
directed by: Clint Eastwood

: essential video:Readers of John Berendt's bestselling novel were bound to be at least somewhat disappointed by this big-screen adaptation, but despite mixed reaction from critics and audiences, there's still plenty to admire about director Clint Eastwood's take on the material. Readers will surely miss the rich atmosphere and societal detail that Berendt brought to his 'Savannah story,' and the movie can only scratch the surface of Georgian history, tradition, and wealthy decadence underlying Berendt's fact-based murder mystery. Still, Eastwood maintains an assured ...

: :'l feel like l've been handed a new life,' says Tom Ripley at a crucial turning point of this well-cast, stylishly crafted psychological thriller. Having been sent by Dickie's father to retrieve the errant son from ltaly, ...

Cold Mountain

Cold Mountain

»rank: 10024

starring: Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renée Zellweger, Eileen Atkins, Brendan Gleeson
directed by: Anthony Minghella

: :Freely adapted from Charles Frazier's beloved bestseller, Cold Mountain boasts an impeccable pedigree as a respectable Civil War love story, offering everything you'd want from a romantic epic except a resonant emotional core. Everything in this sweeping, 0dyssean journey depends on believing in the instant love that ignites during a very brief encounter between genteel, city-bred preacher's daughter Ada (Nicole Kidman) and Confederate soldier lnman (Jude Law), who deserts the battlefield to return, weary and wounded, to Ada's inherited farm in the rural ...

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

»rank: 17325

starring: Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, Frances O'Connor, Sam Robards, Jake Thomas
directed by: Steven Spielberg

: :History will place an asterisk next to A.l. as the film Stanley Kubrick might have directed. But let the record also show that Kubrick--after developing this project for some 15 years--wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition of Pinocchio, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg's kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brian Aldiss short story 'Supertoys Last All Summer Long') after Kubrick's death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. ...

I Heart Huckabees

I Heart Huckabees

»rank: 14846

starring: Jason Schwartzman, Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg, Dustin Hoffman
directed by: David O. Russell

: :Billed as 'an existential comedy,' l Heart Huckabees is a flawed yet endearingly audacious screwball romp that dares to ponder life's biggest questions. Much of director David 0. Russell's philosophical humor is dense, talky, and impenetrable, leading critic Roger Ebert to observe that 'it leaves the viewer out of the loop,' and suggesting that Russell's screenplay (written with his assistant, Jeff Baena) is admirably bold yet frustratingly undisciplined. Russell's ideas are big but his expression of them is frenetic, centering on the unlikely ...

eXistenZ

eXistenZ

»rank: 19728

starring: Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ian Holm, Willem Dafoe, Don McKellar
directed by: David Cronenberg

: :Director David Cronenberg's eXistenZ is a stew of corporate espionage, virtual reality gaming, and thriller elements, marinated in Cronenberg's favorite Crock-Pot juices of technology, physiology, and sexual metaphor. Jennifer Jason Leigh is game designer Allegra Geller, responsible for the new state-of-the-art eXistenZ game system; along with PR newbie Ted Pikul (Jude Law), they take the beta version of the game for a test drive and are immersed in a dangerous alternate reality. The game isn't quite like PlayStation, though; it's a latexy pod ...

Enemy at the Gates (Spec)

»rank: 11281

starring: Jude Law, Ed Harris, Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Bob Hoskins
directed by: Jean-Jacques Annaud

: :Like Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates opens with a pivotal event of World War ll--the German invasion of Stalingrad--re-created in epic scale, as ill-trained Russian soldiers face German attack or punitive execution if they flee from the enemy's advance. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud captures this madness with urgent authenticity, creating a massive context for a more intimate battle waged amid the city's ruins. Embellished from its basis in fact, the story shifts to an intense cat-and-mouse game between a Russian shepherd raised ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
