starring: Jon Finch, Francesca Annis, Martin Shaw, Terence Bayler, John Stride
directed by: Roman Polanski

: essential video:Roman Polanski's adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy remains one of the most infamous for a number of reasons: the copious amounts of bloody gore, its expert use of location settings (filmed in North Wales), and Lady Macbeth's nude sleepwalking scene. Despite its notoriety, though, this does remain one of the more compelling film adaptations of the Scottish tragedy, if one of the more pessimistic takes on the story of Macbeth and his overreaching ambition. lf you think the play is normally ...

Spot Goes to a Party

Spot Goes to a Party

»rank: 1913

starring: Paul Nicholas, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Peter Hawkins, Calum Nielsen

: :Spot, the cutest puppy in the world, goes to a costume party and tries figuring out which of his friends is wearing what costume. 0ther stories include 'Spot's First Picnic,' 'Spot Follows His Nose,' and 'Spot Goes to the Fair.' The colors are primary, the animation extremely simple but pleasing (though what works in the books that this series is based upon doesn't always translate into logical action), the characters fun, the stories good. Very much for little, little viewers. --Tom Keogh

directed by: Ken Russell

: :Lisztomania, Ken Russell's follow-up to Tommy (both films were released in 1975) finds him even more in the mood for desultory spectacle than his garish pop artistry adapting the Who's rock opera. Seeking to tell the story of superstar composer Franz Liszt through a freewheeling series of pop allegories, kitsch, quotes, and pastiches, Russell hopes to reflect in contemporary terms the runaway train of Liszt's celebrity, love life, and alleged rivalry with Richard Wagner. Roger Daltrey, the Who vocalist and star of Tommy, ...

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
