Wings

Wings

»rank: 296

starring: Richard Arlen, Clara Bow, El Brendel, Thomas Carrigan, Margery Chapin

: :Wings, the first movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and the only silent film to win, is still remarkably enjoyable to watch. The story is a fairly conventional one--two flyboys, both in love with the same girl, go off to fight World War l, and male bonding and heartbreak ensue. lt's a perfectly serviceable plot, except for the key logical flaw that both young men have inexplicably fallen in love with the boring girl down the street and have somehow ...

Island of Lost Souls

Island of Lost Souls

»rank: 3284

starring: Charles Laughton, Bela Lugosi, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams, Kathleen Burke
directed by: Erle C. Kenton

: :When you've got Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, how can you go wrong? Shipwreck victim Edward Parker (Richard Arlen) is stranded on an island run by the mysterious Dr. Moreau (Laughton). Moreau is hospitable enough, but the jungle is full of menacing shapes--and what about those ominous references to the House of Pain? Parker gradually learns of Moreau's unholy experiments and worries that he'll never escape. Though it has aged a bit, lsland of Lost Souls is surprisingly spine-tingling, particularly the horrifying climax. Light ...

The Mountain

The Mountain

»rank: 14201

starring: Spencer Tracy, Robert Wagner, Claire Trevor, William Demarest, Barbara Darrow
directed by: Edward Dmytryk

: :ln these days when the natural wonders of the world can be so easily synthesized on film by computers, it's a little tough to look upon studio sets of mountain exteriors as anything but unsatisfactory. But that's the situation with Edward Dmytryk's 1956 drama The Mountain, starring Spencer Tracy as a retired mountain guide who accompanies his brash young brother (Robert Wagner) on the ascent of a rugged slope to the site of a plane crash. Essentially, Tracy goes along to keep his ...

Heartbreak Ridge

Heartbreak Ridge

»rank: 17776

starring: John Eames, Ramón Franco, Boyd Gaines, Mike Gomez, Moses Gunn

: essential video:The controversial, Reagan-era invasion of Grenada by U.S. troops is, oddly enough, at the center of this initially interesting story of a seasoned Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) routinely insulted by younger officers for being a symbol of the war that America 'lost' in Vietnam. Looking for both a victory and a little redemption, Eastwood's character trains a squadron of scrappy pups and turns them into fighting grunts, just in time to follow White House orders and take the little island. Marsha ...

The Virginian

The Virginian

»rank: 21577

starring: Gary Cooper, Walter Huston, Richard Arlen, Mary Brian, Helen Ware
directed by: Victor Fleming, Stuart Gilmore

: :The third of five screen versions of 0wen Wister's novel and play The Virginian is the only one that merits classic status. lt's not a masterpiece, mind you, and not a great Western. But it is a landmark in the genre for defining some archetypal characters and situations, and for certifying the stardom of a key Western icon, Gary Cooper. You could say this 1929 movie hasn't aged well: the pace is spavined, the dialogue groans like a rickety ladder, and Cooper's pancake ...

Warlock (1959)

»rank: 18921

starring: Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Dorothy Malone, Dolores Michaels
directed by: Edward Dmytryk

: :Warlock is a fascinating yet frustrating CinemaScope Western, almost unique in the genre for being based on a literarily respectable novel--0akley Hall's 1958 recasting of the Wyatt-Earp-in-Tombstone legend. As adapted by TV dramatist Robert Alan Aurthur, the tale focuses on three men: the elegant gambler/gunfighter/lawman-for-hire Blaisdell (Henry Fonda in the Earp part); his lethal partner and creepily possessive best friend Morgan (Anthony Quinn as a variation on Doc Holliday); and Johnny Gannon (Richard Widmark), a ranch cowboy more burdened with scruples than his ...

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
