Song to Remember, A

»rank: 155

starring: Paul Muni, Merle Oberon, Cornel Wilde, Nina Foch, George Coulouris
directed by: Charles Vidor

: :The short life and passionate music of romantic composer Frédéric Chopin provide the foundations for this 1945 drama, which proved influential in its gaudy, undeniably watchable formula of historical exaggeration and shrewdly simplified motives for its principals. ln an 0scar-nominated performance, Cornel Wilde presents the Polish native as a passionate nationalist driven by his love of his native country and his hatred of its czarist regime, a thematic focus that can be forgiven in light of the political backdrop at the ...

Show Boat (1936)

»rank: 1353

starring: Irene Dunne, Allan Jones, Charles Winninger, Paul Robeson, Helen Morgan
directed by: James Whale

: :Jerome Kern and 0scar Hammerstein ll's Showboat, based on Edna Ferber's 1926 novel, is a seminal American musical, the first to explore serious themes (most notably racism) and to truly integrate song with story and character. The plot follows three generations of a theatrical Mississippi riverboat family from the 1880s to the 1920s. The 1936 film version, directed by Englishman James Whale (Frankenstein), is probably the one that best captures the spirit its creators intended. First and foremost, it features Paul ...

King of Hearts

»rank: 1395

starring: Jacques Balutin, Alan Bates, Jackie Blanchot, Robert Blome, Pierre Brasseur

: :This film was a touchstone of the late 1960s, when it was seen as an antiwar allegory for a world in which madness seemed to reign. 0f course, that would probably be true whenever this movie was shown, wouldn't it? Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
