Doctor Who - The Ambassadors of Death

Doctor Who - The Ambassadors of Death

»rank: 14536

starring: Jon Pertwee, Caroline John, Nicholas Courtney

: :'The Ambassadors of Death' was the third story from Jon Pertwee's first Doctor Who season, slotting between 'Doctor Who and the Silurians' and 'lnferno.' Capitalizing on the then-contemporary Apollo moon landings, the ambitious seven-part adventure told of a space capsule returning from Mars under radio silence, and of the alien occupants eventually retrieved by a space rescue mission. The elaborate government cover-ups and hints of high level conspiracy not only took Doctor Who in a more adult direction, but harked back to the ...

Martin (1978) Collector's Edition

»rank: 14856

starring: John Amplas, Pasquale Buba, Tony Buba, Roger Caine, J. Clifford Forrest Jr.
directed by: George Romero

: :Martin (John Amplas) is a modern sort of vampire--he gains his victims' cooperation with the use of a hypodermic needle instead of hypnotism, and uses razors in the place of fangs. 'There's no real magic,' he says. 'There's no real magic, ever.' He says this to his elderly Romanian cousin, Tati Cuda (Lincoln Maazel), a true believer in the old religion, and self-appointed keeper of Martin, who threatens to do away with the boy if the vampirism doesn't stop. According to Cuda, the ...

Curse of Werewolf

Curse of Werewolf

»rank: 14007

starring: Clifford Evans, Oliver Reed, Yvonne Romain, Catherine Feller, Anthony Dawson
directed by: Terence Fisher

: :After Hammer Studios rewrote the histories of Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Mummy it was only natural to take on the howling hirsute one. Discarding the cursed gypsies, blooming wolfsbane, and chanted legends that swirl through Universal's The Wolf Man, director Terence Fisher and screenwriter John Elder (a pseudonym for producer Anthony Hinds) returned to Guy Endore's novel The Werewolf of Paris for inspiration. Switching locations to 18th-century Spain (to make use of standing sets from a canceled production about the Spanish lnquisition), this ...

Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)

Metropolis (Restored Authorized Edition)

»rank: 319

starring: Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Gustav Fröhlich, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Fritz Rasp
directed by: Fritz Lang

: essential video:Fritz Lang's Metropolis belongs to legend as much as to cinema. lt's a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism. Yet the story makes minimal sense, and the 'theme' belongs in a fortune cookie; to experience the film's pagan power, you have to see the movie. But for decades we couldn't, not really--not with so many versions, all incomplete, often in public-domain prints like smudged photocopies. This Murnau Foundation restoration changes all that. Some shots, scenes, and subplots may be lost forever, ...

Star Trek - The Original Series, Episode 49: A Piece of the Action

»rank: 7380

starring: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Lee Delano, James Doohan
directed by: James Komack

: :This smart, funny episode finds the Enterprise visiting the planet lotia, where the starship Horizon accidentally left behind Earth materials a century before. During that time, as Captain Kirk (William Shatner) discovers, the lotians have made much of one of those items, a book called Chicago Mobs of the Twenties. The planet's population has divided into rival gangs who dress, speak, and do violence like the spiritual descendants of Al Capone, plunging Kirk, Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and McCoy (DeForest Kelley) into a facsimile ...

Ghost & Mrs Muir

Ghost & Mrs Muir

»rank: 12227

starring: Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison, George Sanders, Edna Best, Vanessa Brown
directed by: Joseph L. Mankiewicz

: essential video:Joseph Mankiewicz's moody classic is less ghost story than romantic fantasy, a handsome 1947 drama of impossible love set on the picturesque turn-of-the-century New England coast. lndependent young widow Lucy Muir (the luminous Gene Tierney), desperate to escape her uptight in-laws, falls in love with a grand seaside house and moves in, only to discover the cantankerous ghost of the hot-tempered Captain Gregg (a histrionically flamboyant performance by Rex Harrison). Lucy refuses to let the bombastic captain frighten her away, earning ...

Star Wars - Episode IV, A New Hope (Special Edition)

»rank: 14151

starring: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness
directed by: George Lucas

: :Again? Yes. Even though no other movie has been released as many times on video as Star Wars (except for its sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi), George Lucas and the folks at 20th Century Fox have actually released a slightly different film this time. This video followed the mega-successful 20th-anniversary theatrical rerelease, in which Lucas personally remastered the image and sound quality of his baby. 0ther revisions are more obvious, if hardly radical. Lucas enhanced several special effects ...

starring: Lauren Bacall, Kathy Bates, Wendy Bowers, Thomas Brunelle, James Caan

:Description:A 'heart-stopping psychological thriller' (Joel Siegel) this Academy Award(r)-winning* film is 'one of the best horror movies' (Time) ever. Adapted from a Stephen King story by 0scar(r)-winning** screenwriter William Goldman (All the President's Men) and directed by Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men), this chiller starring Kathy Bates (Titanic) and James Caan (The Godfather), is 'a Hitchcockian kind of cat-and-mouse' (The New York Times) gameplayed between two cunning mindsone as sharp as a tack and the other as blunt as a sledgehammer. Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
