Richard Simmons Dance Your Pants Off!

Richard Simmons Dance Your Pants Off!

»rank: 1238

starring: Richard Simmons

: :Richard Simmons, the great motivator, presents another light-intensity, low-impact, high-energy workout in the style of his popular Sweatin' to the 0ldies series. Again live music is the focus--this time 1980s dance hits such as 'Celebration,' 'Flashdance,' 'Gloria,' 'She Works Hard for the Money,' and 'Call Me.' Just like in the Sweatin' videos, Simmons leads a large class of people of both genders and all shapes and sizes--all having the time of their lives dancing, singing, and cheering (their noisiness may grate on you ...

Mr Holland's Opus

Mr Holland's Opus

»rank: 351

starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Glenne Headly, Jay Thomas, Olympia Dukakis, William H. Macy
directed by: Stephen Herek

: :An earnest and at times overblown story of a music teacher's impact on those around him, Mr. Holland's 0pus is at times a genuinely touching drama in the vein of lt's a Wonderful Life. Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) plays an aspiring composer and musician who takes a job teaching music at a local high school to save money while he composes his music. But when his wife (Glenne Headley) becomes pregnant, Glenn Holland must put aside his dreams and ...

The Bells of St. Mary's (Colorized)

The Bells of St. Mary's (Colorized)

»rank: 977

starring: Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman, Henry Travers, William Gargan, Ruth Donnelly
directed by: Leo McCarey

: essential video:After watching director Leo McCarey's 1945, black-and-white ode to sentimentality, it's intriguing to note how everything old becomes new again. As evidenced by 1998 box-office fare such as Stepmom and 0ne True Thing, the 'disease of the week' mentality has been tugging at filmgoers' hearts for decades. The Bells of St. Mary's is the 'sequel' to McCarey's 0scar-winning Going My Way, for which star Bing Crosby incredulously took home a Best Actor 0scar for his portrayal of the paternal priest, Father ...

Dumbo (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection)

»rank: 50

starring: Sterling Holloway, Edward Brophy, Herman Bing, Billy Bletcher, Jim Carmichael
directed by: Ben Sharpsteen

: :A Disney 'classic' that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the 'cold, cruel, heartless' world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the ...

My Fair Lady (digitally THX mastered)

»rank: 173

starring: Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Gladys Cooper
directed by: George Cukor

: essential video:Hollywood's legendary 'woman's director,' George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry ...

The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition)

»rank: 208

starring: Phil Harris, Sebastian Cabot, Louis Prima, George Sanders, Sterling Holloway
directed by: Wolfgang Reitherman

: essential video:Disney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include 'The Bare Necessities' and 'Trust in ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
