The Music Man

The Music Man

»rank: 1609

starring: Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford
directed by: Morton DaCosta, Scott Benson

: essential video:The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as 'Professor' Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the 'think system.' But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always ...

starring: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley
directed by: King Vidor, Mervyn LeRoy, Richard Thorpe, Victor Fleming

: essential video:When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of 0z didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while 0z's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great ...

: :There's lots of buzz in this stage performance by Barney and the gang at Radio City Music Hall. The musical extravaganza has plenty of bright colors, great sets and props, super costumes, and even an airplane. What's more, there's a story: a character called the Winkster takes the Barney bag, which is full of magic. Barney and company have to teach him to share in order to get the bag back. Among the live songs are 'The More We Get Together' and 'Mr. ...

Hercules (A Walt Disney Masterpiece)

»rank: 219

starring: Tate Donovan, Susan Egan, James Woods, Josh Keaton, Roger Bart
directed by: John Musker, Ron Clements

: :Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
