John Denver - Let This Be a Voice

»rank: 14447

starring: Nature, Peter Coyote
directed by: Sandy Ostertag

: :This 1998 documentary is haunted by the memory of Denver's tragic death shortly after production. That loss to his many fans and admirers makes many a moment in this production especially poignant, juxtaposing the singer-songwriter's artistic legacy with his other great passion in life: nature. There is lively footage of Denver on the Colorado River along with his children, and a campside scene in which his son and daughter witness him composing a song (the last one of his life, as it turned ...

directed by: Kizo Nagashima, Larry Roemer

: :This classic 1964 television special featuring Rudolph and his misfit buddies set the standard for stop-motion animation for an entire generation before Tim Burton darkly reinvented it in the early 1990s. Burl lves narrates as Sam the Snowman, telling and singing the story of a rejected reindeer who overcomes prejudice and saves Christmas one particularly blustery year. Along the way, he meets an abundance of unforgettable characters: his dentally obsessed elf pal Hermey; the affable miner Yukon Cornelius and his motley crew of ...

: :Taped during a 1999 tribute in Pittsburgh, this straightforward, live review honors rock 'n' roll's '50s and early '60s legacy of vocal groups. For oldies fans hoping to bask in nostalgia, the caliber of the hits and the inclusion of most of the groups originally associated with the recorded hits make Doo Wop at 50 a satisfying stroll down memory lane. ln light of the focal importance of the songs, rather than the singers, for the majority of listeners the program's choice of ...

:Description:Cavis Appythart and Millward Phelps (Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber) are putting the finishing touches on their first Christmas Spectacular musical - 'The Princess and the Plumber.' With stage great Effie Pickering in the lead role and more electric lights than 1880's London could ever hope to illuminate, Cavis is sure his show will 'teach London how to love!' On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
