Heavy Metal (Thx)

Heavy Metal (Thx)

»rank: 10452

starring: Richard Romanus, John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Rodger Bumpass, Jackie Burroughs
directed by: Gerald Potterton

: :As long as there is a need for adolescent male sexual fantasy, there will be an audience for Heavy Metal. Released in 1981 and based on stories from the graphic magazine of the same name (possibly the greatest publication to simultaneously provoke imagination and masturbation), the film has since become the most popular single title in Columbia/TriStar's entire film library. That's an amazing fact considering just how silly and senseless the movie really is--an aimless, juvenile amalgam of disjointed stories and clashing visual ...

Party

Party

»rank: 6920

starring: Peter Sellers, Claudine Longet, Natalia Borisova, Jean Carson, Marge Champion
directed by: Blake Edwards

: :Though this film is a relatively minor one in the massive canon of Peter Sellers, it has moments of absolute hilarity. Written and directed by Blake Edwards, one of Sellers's most fertile collaborators, the film stars Sellers as a would-be actor from lndia (let them try to get away with that today) who is a walking disaster area. After ruining a day's shooting as an extra on a film, he finds himself unintentionally invited to a big Hollywood party. That's pretty much it ...

Up in Smoke

Up in Smoke

»rank: 3154

starring: Edie Adams, Marian Beeler, Pam Bille, Michael Caldwell (III), Tommy Chong
directed by: Tommy Chong, Lou Adler

: :Cheech & Chong's first cannabis comedy is also their best, a souvenir from the more carefree days before 'Just Say No,' when people did not feel so defensive about inhaling. ln 1978, the prevailing spirit was more like 'Just Say Blow.' Even New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael liked it (the movie, that is), adding that it was 'an exploitation slapstick comedy, rather than a family picture, such as Blazing Saddles or High Anxiety--which means that it's dirtier, wilder, and sillier.' The story ...

Cry-Baby

Cry-Baby

»rank: 5557

starring: Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake, Amy Locane, Susan Tyrrell, Polly Bergen
directed by: John Waters

: essential video:John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain 'good' in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and lggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and ...

Barbarella

Barbarella

»rank: 14451

starring: Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea, Marcel Marceau
directed by: Roger Vadim

: essential video:Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying ...

It's Alive

»rank: 13790

starring: John P. Ryan, Sharon Farrell, James Dixon, William Wellman Jr., Shamus Locke
directed by: Larry Cohen

:Description:A couple expecting a baby discover it's a monster that kills when it's scared. : A young couple joyously awaiting the birth of their newborn is in for a horrifying surprise in this thrilling low-budget '70s hit. lt's Alive wastes no time in establishing that there is something terribly wrong with the Davies' new baby in a shocking opening 'escape' sequence not intended for the faint of heart. As baby 'lt's Alive' makes its way home from the hospital destroying anything in its ...

directed by: John Waters

: essential video:lf you don't enjoy circus freaks, transvestites, and the idea of intimate relations with arthropods, then you probably won't get the humor in Multiple Maniacs. lf, on the other hand, you enjoyed John Waters's infamous Pink Flamingos ('the filthiest film ever made!'), then check out this earlier attempt to shock even the most jaded moviegoer. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

»rank: 4516

starring: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffrè, Luigi Pistilli
directed by: Sergio Leone

:Description:By far the most ambitious, unflinchingly graphic and stylistically influential western ever mounted, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is an engrossing actioner shot through with a volatile mix of myth and realism. Clint Eastwood returns as the 'Man With No Name,' this time teaming with two gunslingers (Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef) to pursue a cache of $200,000and letting no one, not even warring factions in a civil war, stand in their way. From sun-drenched panoramas to bold, hard close-ups, exceptional ...

Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film features the championship runs of Roger Federerer and Maria Sharapova. While beating Andy Roddick was just another day at the office for the top-ranked Federerer, Russian teen Sharapova turned heads by offering a fresh new face on the women's tour, and it didn't hurt a bit that the face looked like that of a model--"Anna Kournikova with a title," she was quickly dubbed. Other moments of the fortnight captured here include Goran Ivanesevic's farewell, the scoring controversy that might have cost Venus Williams a match, and--because this is a British production--Tim Henman's latest attempt to keep the Wimbledon crown at home. At only 52 minutes, however, there's not a whole lot of time to devote to actual game footage, and the camera has a dizzying habit of cutting to a close-up of a player in the middle of a point, making it hard to follow the action. The short running time makes Wimbledon: The 2004 Official Film feel somewhat like a relic from the VHS days, but it certainly looks good in anamorphic widescreen. --David Horiuchi

The Olsen twins are turning 16, and they're celebrating with this collection of party games and, you guessed it, driving lessons. The good news is that if you can help them get past the obstacles and pass the test, they'll take you out with their new driver's licenses to a variety of fun minigame activities, like rock climbing, riding Jet Skis, surfing, ATV quad racing, and shopping for clothes. Earn points in the party games and spend them to upgrade the car and unlock cool tunes and cooler outfits.

It's not very often that a game aims to be fun and realistic while instilling a sense of personal involvement and responsibility. Mary-Kate and Ashley: Winners Circle does that within the theme of horseback riding. Players compete in such equestrian events as dressage, jumping, and cross-country, and learn the basics of caring for a horse. The game offers a practice mode, which lets riders master the controls and explore a course before entering events, and an adventure mode with large forest and island levels where players can play minigames or just simply explore.
