Lady Day - The Many Faces of Billie Holiday

Lady Day - The Many Faces of Billie Holiday

»rank: 22199

starring: Billie Holiday

: :Given the often inextricable relationship between art and suffering, it's no coincidence that Billie Holiday, popularly acclaimed as jazz's greatest (if not technically best) female singer, was also one of its most tragic figures. While both triumph and tragedy are covered in this hourlong documentary, we are mercifully spared excessive details about the more sordid aspects of Holiday's life (her drug and alcohol addictions, her disastrous relationships with abusive men) in favor of careful consideration of her music. Testimonials are offered by those ...

Higher Learning

»rank: 17140

starring: Omar Epps, Kristy Swanson, Michael Rapaport, Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube
directed by: John Singleton

: :This ambitious 1995 film by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood) doesn't quite succeed at painting the illuminating, collective portrait of college life in the '90s that the director seeks. But Singleton does do a fine job of defining some conflicting impulses for young people on the cusp of adulthood, particularly the desire to broaden horizons on the one hand and circle the wagons with like-minded allies on the other. Students in the film's Columbus University divide themselves along lines of race, sexual ...

starring: Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Don King, James Brown, B.B. King
directed by: Leon Gast

: essential video:Decades ago, documentary filmmaker Leon Gast attempted to complete a feature about the 1974 'Rumble in the Jungle' championship bout between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire. Sundry complications, though, held up the project until its release in 1996. lt was well worth the delay. From Gast's perspective of modern history, the six weeks Ali and Foreman were forced to spend waiting in Africa for their fight to take place now looks like an important moment in America's ...

The Story of Jazz

»rank: 22954

starring: Various Artists

: :Produced as the title segment to a six-part series, this 90-minute documentary traces the evolution of jazz from its 19th-century origins in New 0rleans's Congo Square, where slaves first introduced American listeners to the complex rhythms and earthy textures of African music. How that cultural diaspora combined with European and American folk, classical, and popular styles to become jazz, 'America's classical music,' is an oft-told tale, but it's handsomely served here by an intelligent script shaped by veteran jazz journalist Chris Albertson, and ...

Michael Jordan's Playground

»rank: 21441

starring: Michael Jordan, Tyrin Turner, Christopher Reid, Christopher Martin
directed by: Zack Snyder

: :Basketball legend Michael Jordan is both subject and star of this video, which begins with a dizzying montage of Jordan's spectacular moves on the court. That's followed by dramatic feature about a dejected teenager who doesn't make the cut at a high school basketball team tryout but who winds up, as if by magic, getting coaching from Jordan himself. Pertinent clips from Jordan's college and pro career illustrate particular points as he delivers lessons about determination and 'heart.' Some of Jordan's teammates and ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
