Dog Day Afternoon

Dog Day Afternoon

»rank: 7378

starring: Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, Chris Sarandon, Sully Boyar
directed by: Sidney Lumet

: essential video:A gripping true crime yarn, a juicy slice of overheated New York atmosphere, and a splendid showcase for its young actors, Dog Day Afternoon is a minor classic of the 1970s. The opening montage of New York street life (set to Elton John's lazy 'Amoreena') establishes the oppressive mood of a scorching afternoon in the city with such immediacy that you can almost smell the garbage baking in the sun and the water from the hydrants evaporating from the sizzling pavement. ...

Daughters of Darkness

Daughters of Darkness

»rank: 32868

starring: Delphine Seyrig, John Karlen, Danielle Ouimet, Andrea Rau, Paul Esser
directed by: Harry Kümel

: :Art-movie goddess Delphine Seyrig (Last Year at Marienbad) slinks through the plush Eurotrash settings as the deathless Elizabeth Bathory, Vampire Countess, in Harry Kümel's minor Dutch classic of lesbian erotic-gothic. Blood mingles with water during the languorous shower scenes. Set at an upper-crust seaside resort, the 1971 film recounts Bathory's plot to replace her current consort (Andrea Rau) with a fresher specimen, an abused newlywed whose brutal young husband is an inconvenience waiting to be eliminated. Although both the bi-sex and the neck-biting ...

Victor Victoria

Victor Victoria

»rank: 2098

starring: Julie Andrews, James Garner, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren, Alex Karras
directed by: Blake Edwards

: essential video:Blake Edwards's delightful Victor/Victoria may be one of the last of the great, old-style movie musical comedies--it is so good, it was turned into a hit Broadway stage musical years later. And both versions starred Edwards's wife Julie Andrews (the former Mary Poppins) in the title role--as Victor and Victoria. She's a down-and-out singer who hooks up with a flamboyantly gay theatrical veteran (Robert Preston), and together they become the toast of 1934 Paris by dreaming up a provocative nightclub act ...

Torch Song Trilogy

Torch Song Trilogy

»rank: 20961

starring: Anne Bancroft, Matthew Broderick, Harvey Fierstein, Brian Kerwin, Karen Young
directed by: Paul Bogart

: :Harvey Fierstein had a smash hit on Broadway with the stage version of this story about a drag queen, but whatever the magic there was doesn't show up in this film adaptation. (Fierstein allegedly couldn't line up an A-list or even B-list director in 1988 to tackle the gay story line, so he agreed to work with Paul Bogart, a ubiquitous television director but an undistinguished feature filmmaker.) Fierstein's performance is fine, but likely a shadow of his live work, while Anne Bancroft ...

The Silence

The Silence

»rank: 28381

starring: Ingrid Thulin, Gunnel Lindblom, Birger Malmsten, Håkan Jahnberg, Jörgen Lindström
directed by: Ingmar Bergman

:Description:The Silence, the third film of Bergman's religious trilogy (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light), depicts a world in which God is silent, a world of despair. United since childhood in a love-hate relationship of lesbian incest, two sisters struggle and part as the younger seeks her freedom in a heterosexual affair. Bergman expresses their conflict in visual terms, with little dialogue, as he probes deeply into loneliness, love, and sexual obsession. His somber view of modern man's condition, wherein human relations are ...

Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss

Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss

»rank: 33019

starring: Brad Rowe, Sean Hayes, Richard Ganoung, Meredith Scott Lynn, Matthew Ashford
directed by: Tommy O'Haver

: :First-time director Tommy 0'Haver garnered a lot of critical acclaim for this contribution to the 'new queer cinema.' But he seems more clued in as to its weight than the reviewers. 0'Haver rightly calls Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss a Tommy 0'Haver 'trifle' in the credits and he's on the money in estimating what his film is worth. For sure, the movie has much going for it; it's wholeheartedly enjoyable and packed with the usual dynamic that saturates most gay-themed films: what does one ...

This camp spectacle stars Sherilyn Fenn (Boxing Helena) as an upper-crust Southern belle who abandons the posh life for sex on the road with a carny worker. Naturally, the older folk (Burl Ives, Louise Fletcher) take exception. Typically silly, soft-porn stuff from director Zalman King (Wild Orchid), this erotic joke of a movie is good for putting one's busy brain on hold for awhile. Colorful support from Kristy McNichol as a cowgirl, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and the late Hervé Villechaiz (Fantasy Island). --Tom Keogh

Of course, the device can also function as a handy and highly accurate clock. It also comes with a detachable belt holder and security strap so it's always close at hand.
