Broadway Melody of 1940

»rank: 6496

starring: Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell, George Murphy, Frank Morgan, Ian Hunter

: :0ne of the most famous tap numbers in film history distinguishes Broadway Melody of 1940, the fourth and final installment in MGM's Broadway Melody series. When Clare Bennett (Eleanor Powell, who had appeared in Broadway Melody of 1936 and 1938) needs a new partner for her hit Broadway show, small-time hoofers Johnny Brett (Fred Astaire in his MGM debut) and King Shaw (George Murphy) get their big chance. But due to a case of mistaken identity, King, rather than the more talented Johnny, ...

Farewell: Live From the Universal Amphitheatre, Halloween 1995

Farewell: Live From the Universal Amphitheatre, Halloween 1995

»rank: 3241

starring: Oingo Boingo

: :'This is like one big orgasm!' says singer-frontman Danny Elfman toward the end of 0ingo Boingo's final concert on Halloween night, 1995. That's an apt comparison, since this two-hour, 45-minute performance plays like an extended climax, with Elfman and his bandmates putting out enough energy to light a small city and turn their costumed devotees into a pulsing mass of mutual love. Elfman's like a supernova onstage, maintaining a miraculous pace through 32 songs, any one of which qualifies as definitive Boingo (though ...

The Wizard of Oz (Gift set)

»rank: 15333

starring: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley
directed by: King Vidor, Mervyn LeRoy, Richard Thorpe, Victor Fleming

: essential video:When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of 0z didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while 0z's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great ...

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Pink Floyd - The Wall

»rank: 10252

starring: Bob Geldof, Christine Hargreaves, James Laurenson, Eleanor David, Kevin McKeon
directed by: Alan Parker

: :By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught ...

Angelina Ballerina - Lights, Camera, Action!

»rank: 7571

directed by: Kitty Taylor, Roger McIntosh

:Description:When Angelina enters a movie-making contest, she makes a weepy melodrama and puts herself, of course, in the starring role.

All the Mornings of the World (Tous les matins du monde)

All the Mornings of the World (Tous les matins du monde)

»rank: 13731

starring: Gérard Depardieu, Jean-Pierre Marielle, Anne Brochet, Guillaume Depardieu, Carole Richert
directed by: Alain Corneau

: essential video:Gérard Depardieu plays a court composer at Versailles whose sense of artistic emptiness causes him to reflect upon his old music teacher (Jean-Pierre Marielle), a man who taught him more than music but whom he ultimately betrayed. (The younger version of Depardieu's character is portrayed by the actor's son, Guillaume.) Alain Corneau's gorgeous 1991 film has a slow, deliberative air about it, with little dialogue and a painterly look (shot by cinematographer-director Yves Angelo, maker of Colonel Chabert) that paradoxically inspires ...

Year: 1953 Director: David Butler Starring: Doris Day, Gordon MacRae, Billy Gray :The huge popularity of the nostalgic 0n Moonlight Bay prompted this 1953 sequel, which recaptures the first film's small-town, post-WWl spirit. Orchestra Wives

Orchestra Wives

»rank: 13979

starring: George Montgomery, Ann Rutherford, Glenn Miller, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Lynn Bari
directed by: Archie Mayo

: :'lt's Hep! lt's Hot! lt's Hilarious!' reads the tagline for 0rchestra Wives, a frothy slice of celluloid made in 1942 and featuring the great Glenn Miller Band. And that tagline is, well, sort of true. As is often the case with films of this genre (musical comedy with the occasional touch of drama), the story is largely superfluous: a naïve, smalltown girl (Ann Rutherford) falls for a fast-talking, smooth-playing trumpeter (George Montgomery); he proposes after spending, oh, about fifteen minutes with her (and ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
